Why half life 2 sucks

8 Jun

We all have those classic games we missed. For me that’s anything on the PC including everything put out by Valve. Now I have my 360 and have the opportunity to relive the past I missed.

All this to say for the first time I’m playing Half Life 2.

And though there’s tonnes of good things to say about it I’m only going to point out one thing…The audio design sucks. I have a fairly rag-tag/gutter-ific sound system for my TV bet regardless of whether I use the stock TV speakers or my big amp it sounds terrible.

Really, really terrible.

Some high pitched chirping alien bugs combined with my automatic weapon and it feels like I am:

  1. Destroying my speakers
  2. Destroying my eardrums

I would absolutely love for somebody to agree with me. I would love to know that somebody else noticed and I’m not crazy.

Maybe headphones help?

(The following is necessary to keep the site afloat, so please give it a looksee)

Having home theater systems is both exhilarating and tiring at the same time. It is like managing a flat panel tv and 2 or 3 dvd players at the same time. Old televisions were easier to live with.

The shitty sound system might be the problem? 😛

    Valve Fan boy.

    Here’s another one for you.

Autosave points. Got to the beach highway, taking my little cart on an adventure, fending off gun ships, so far so good.

Make a crazy jump, land all wierd and find out that this save point is exactly where the gunship unleases hell on my face. And I’ve got 15 health points. I made a new game…it’s called try and stay alive for more than four seconds.

    Half life 2 sucks.

    Nick Halme sucks.

    I should make a post about this…

  3. nickhalme June 13, 2008 at 3:56 am #

Bah! It’s four years old now and it’s still superior to lots of AAA titles being released.

Besides, that can happen in any game with a checkpoint system.

  4. segafanclub June 14, 2008 at 3:34 pm #

I wasn’t a huge fan of half life, partially due to the fact that I would get nauseated after playing it for more then 10 minutes!

    • Nrmartins August 8, 2010 at 6:06 pm #

Why people get nauseated while playing half-life 1 ? Is it a side effect ? How do you get nauseated ?

  5. Duncan Saunders June 15, 2008 at 12:05 pm #

Simulation sickness at work, there I think. I’m waiting to see what happens when Mirrors Edge comes out. Apparently they put a lot of work in to fix that.

I never had a problem with my Half Life 2 sound Mac. Although I was using nice School headphones. I would have been cheesed if I had payed $60 for it though. So short…

  6. zethicus June 18, 2008 at 3:41 pm #

A lot of people say it’s way better on PC than on console, apparently it’s like WAY easier to play on console.

About the sound thing, I always play on my PC with headphones and actually liked Half Life’s sound a lot!

  7. Uzair June 19, 2008 at 3:26 am #

First of all, I simply hate the game. I don’t know, why would someone play that game (online). All you do is shot people coming from other side. It’s not even close to shooting game. It lacks a cool game menu…. There are not a lot of weapons and the place it too short to play.

For your sound problem, you have have messed the options.

  8. Luciano Muñoz July 4, 2008 at 1:25 am #

oh come on!, after Metal Gear, it’s the best game ever… great game play, still to this day great graphics and simulation systems, and more important than everything else, great story.

    hermano estas completamente en pedo

la fisica que implemento el motor source no se compara con nada (por lo menos en el momento que slaio era la mejor)

aguante el hl2 la puta que te pario

I personally just don’t like the game. there are too many puzzles in the game and not enough action. i always have to look online to know wear to go next because nothing’s obvious in the game.

  11. Nic Groves December 16, 2008 at 10:18 pm #

Just me, i luv half-life 2, i reckon u guys must suck at games, coz half-life 2 is fairly easy, i got past that jump thing on the buggy and faced the gunship with at least 50 health and around 25 armor, i finnished the game with ease, and if u havnt finnished the game, it leaves u in suspense, seriously.
Oh but wot would i knw about consoles, Consoles are shit, play this game on PC and u will knw what im talking about.
So Harden up, Get on a PC and play half-life 2, the source engine will change ur life of gaming, Oh plus Garrys mod is the shit!

Be thankful you have eardrums, dude. Some of us don’t have that kind of privelege. 😉

  14. 8039 April 5, 2009 at 1:51 pm #

So your reasons for saying HL2 sucks is a shitty sound system and the fact that you can’t play games for shit? really good points there.

  15. Renhaka June 16, 2009 at 4:10 am #

If you look at the audio files in HL2, they’re very clear quality. The bugs noises aren’t that high pitch (I don’t even think they are at all).
Automatic Weapon, well then, I guess you can just go fire a real one! Wait a second…. That actually DOES ruin your eardrums!
Your own sound system is the problem, if you don’t wanna spend a crap load of money trying to buy an HD TV, just go buy a $40 Sound Chair from Wal-Mart and tada, HQ Sound!

Next Time, actually come up with REAL reasons, and analyze your own situation before flaming some genuine work.

    @ McElroy

You know what, that health problem, totally Valve’s crappy designing.
Wait, no it isn’t! It’s your crappy gaming skills!
It isn’t that hard! You even have a suit to protect you!
And in EVERY game theirs something we did wrong at the check point and we can’t go back! Get used to it, or quit gaming!

  16. Dave Freeman July 2, 2009 at 5:15 pm #

The fact that you’re playing on console might give you the shitty sound. HL2 was made for PC, so give it some respect and play it on a good PC.

As for the other people saying the game sucks because it has puzzles and it might be difficult… too bad, it wasn’t made for idiots. Go play The Sims instead.

  17. Anonymous July 19, 2009 at 8:22 pm #

Well, what a pathetic reason. I was interested to see what you’d say, but that’s just stupid. You have something wrong with your soundsystem, and the game was meant for PC anyway. Console versions were made just for the heck of it – but do not share the same experience. Personally, I find the console version quite crappy as the crosshair functions differently.

For those here who are complaining about health problems and checkpoint problems, you have to be kidding yourself. Half-Life2 is one of the easiest first-person shooters and this fact is even considered a bad thing because really, the game is damn easy. You have to be pretty inexperienced to have trouble solving the puzzles.

Is it really hard to find a ladder? Or to turn a valve so water flows and you can get to the next area? The puzzles require little stress.. and compared to other games, are VERY easy. One or two may get you, but heck that’s what puzzles are SUPPOSED to do.

People who criticize for petty things like these are only looking to put the game down without reason. The checkpoint system does not exactly exist on the PC version either. You can freely save anywhere at any time – and you can load from these points, making it incredibly flexible and easy to get things done and revert if it gets to hard. Compared to other shooters, this is a rare addition to an FPS game. (not much anymore).

Consider the facts stated above before cursing and putting the game down, because personally I find it a masterpiece. Whether you find it good or not, it is definitely not bad because of these sorts of reasons.

Valid reasons would be something like bad level design or repetition.. even stuff like lack of action.. but not this crap. Learn to analyze and understand games properly before posting this crap onto the internet.

    – It gives good games a bad name.

  18. 3rddragunov July 27, 2009 at 10:02 pm #

I agree completely with the guy above me, Half Life 2 is a masterpiece and I cannot wait till the next installations. I did think the sound was clunky though but like that guy stated it`s just becuase of the console ported release of the game. Other then that I found it amazing, full of action and drama and one of my top favorite games and FPS of all time.
    Straight up.

  19. Dave Freeman July 29, 2009 at 2:19 pm #

Looks like most of us agree Valve did do something wrong:
Allowing the game to be ported to console.

    • Anonymous (again) July 29, 2009 at 5:38 pm #

Yes, but I guess it also allows people who cannot own the game on PC to get a similar experience. Still, I think the console version is quite crappy. They also did a few *changes*.

      • NabsterHax October 30, 2009 at 5:31 pm #

It seems to me that valve porting their games to consoles is a mistake. The ports aren’t excellent for a start but the thing is, it seems the console community just can’t appreciate PC Games as much as PC Gamers do. I don’t know why this is but it seems so. I suppose one of the great things about buying for the PC is the ability to mod and map which valve spends a lot of time making easier for people to do.

    1. You can quicksave by pressing F6, load by pressing F9. It’s not that hard.

    2. It’s not Valve’s mistake that you FAIL at playing games.

    3. I wonder how good your reviews would get if you published a game. :’)

  21. Dastardly Bastard August 14, 2009 at 4:51 am #

I agree, the sound is terrible. Using an M-Audio card, with a mixer and two 300watt speakers, with an 800watt subwoofer and my god the sounds in the game are lousy. Also, the gameplay is beyond subpar compared to the original Half-Life. Heck, there isn’t even a clear explanation on how the combine come to such a stance of control.

  22. Sammoniac August 15, 2009 at 10:07 pm #

Haha…first of all, play h-l on PC. Consoles are great for fighting games and third person action games, NOT First Person Shooters!!!! HALO SUCKS! Translate that game on PC, and you’ll see why. Now, to play Half-life (1 or 2) you need reflexes and a brain. If you lack one of those, abandon your FPS life. Half-Life set standards for the industry, its undeniable, since day 1 of the first release. Thanks for listening.

  23. dr.bugbait November 15, 2009 at 6:54 pm #

i agree with sammoniac and plus if you hate it then dont whine onj the internet oh and ps get it for pc

Well, then something is wrong with your ears, mate, because the sound it’s pretty good (not excellent either, but good) unless you are an audio freak. Anyway, THERE IS explanations about the events between HL1 and HL2, Example, you can “ask” the characters ingame and sometimes they will say stuff about how this happened and stuff, also there’s plot information on newspapers, Breen’s speeches and such.

    Interactivity, mate.

  25. Same Anonymous Guy January 6, 2010 at 10:25 pm #

Honestly, just listen to the characters. I know the entire story to a highly decent extent, and it was just from playing properly.

  26. Sast January 18, 2010 at 6:07 am #

For one, you can go in the load menu AND load the save BEFORE you have low health. Your just thinking its to “stupid” and you declare it dumb. They don’t really port it to consoles, the source engine is made to be ran on them, look in the comments of the sdk code.

  27. FG A.K.A. The judge hldm1 February 2, 2010 at 8:04 pm #

HALFLIFE 2 was a bad joke thrown out there by valve , shit graphics shit storyline shit gameplay . Was no way even as good as halflife the original in any aspect , hl2 was a cheap ripoff resident evil copycat that was a massive fail .
I know there are tons of braindead valve brown noser little skill less kiddies who love the game , thats because it was to easy on any difficulty . hl2 never won a single goty when the original won over 50 goty , ” go figure” all these years and it’s still a dead game on a dead engine valve just sucks now days along with steam (read the TOS section 9;c) beofre you use your credit cards inside steam .

    • Anonymous February 17, 2010 at 10:52 pm #

      GG A.K.A. The judge hldm1

I don’t know what the fuck is wrong with you, but you completely disregard all aspects of a good game.

Now ofcourse it’s your opinion of shit gameplay and a crappy storyline, but you’ve pretty much just said

“hey that hollywood grade voice acting and realism in character talking/movement/animation is completely shit”

Now, I don’t know how fucking stupid you are to disregard stuff like that
but I think you need to come out of the closet before you deem ANY game that bad.

Half Life 2 had barely any relation to Resident Evil you douchebag. What, oohhh they both have zombies? Well hey moron, did resident evil contain aliens, helicopters and was it first person shooter?

OH that’s right. You’re comparing a survival horror third-person shooter with a FUCKING SCI-FI FIRST PERSON SHOOTER.

I can’t help but laugh at your complete idiocy. You act like you know what you’re talking about.

People aren’t “braindead valve brown noser kids little skill less kiddies” – whatever the fuck that means.

We enjoy the game for what it is.

Another point to kick your ass which is pretty much beaten up pretty bad at this point, is the fact that Half Life 2 was game of the year in 2004, and also surpasses games up until TODAY in certain aspects.

The graphics don’t match stuff of today, but the options that it was capable of (on PC) were up to Bloom, MSAA x6, ANTI-ALIASING UP TO 16x, and a whole load of other shit.

We had games in 07 that didn’t even have those options.

By the way douchebag, just like I said before, Half Life WAS the game of the year in 2004.

Don’t believe me? I was devastated when I saw it come first, before Halo 2 and Doom 3. That was when I didn’t know about it. Little did I know how good it was.

I honestly don’t know what makes you so fucking stupid to say all this senseless crap with no backup evidence, but I almost feel like not replying.

Honestly how are you so fucking stupid? The amount of idiots on this planet is just ridiculous.

Get a brain before you talk dickhead.

Hello, just today discovered this blog but I have to admit that it looks sweet. I totally agree with you. Have a good day, keep up the great work and I’ll definitely keep checking your blog.I just got in to the BF BC2 PC

I guess each person is entitled to his or her own opinion, but wow, of all the games you could go after about bad sound design, you choose the game that I think has the BEST sound design of any game. Another game with great sound design is S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Some aspects of the sound implementation seem a little amateurish, but the sounds themselves are awesome.

  30. your mom March 13, 2010 at 7:26 am #

if you want to run around and shoot crap all day go play halo 3,if you want to shoot and think about whatever the heck your doing play half life 😉

  31. Jon Fjorg September 21, 2010 at 4:21 am #

HA at least halo 3 and halo reach have decent graphics and a better story line, better customization and better multiplayer and a build your own map option. Half life two is a bunch of shitty ass dialouge half the god damn game than some shit multiplayer modes dude. So go sit there crouched in front of your screen clicking away on a mouse and tapping a keyboard fuiriously till 4 in the morning cause you have no evident life, while i sit down on my nice couch in front of my 45 inch hd tv and play some Halo and have fun at it

    • Random guy December 2, 2010 at 5:17 am #

Jon fjorg, you i must say are full of CRAP. First of all, ive played halo 1, 2, AND 3. their story-line is shit. Ooh, go shoot aliens that want to kill all humans. I like the halo games. but their story aspects are nothing special. Also, halo 3 and halo reach where made in 2006 and 2010. More advanced tech. Half life 2 was being developed from 2000-2004. At its time it was shocking. Also, Better customization? ARE YOU SHITTING ME? DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT A MOD IS? oh, you dont. you play 360. Half life 2 has millions of fan made maps, items, and even Entire games based on the engine. halo 3 you can wear recon and paint your face blue. real customizable. And also, Half life 2 was not meant for multiplayer. it was a single player experience where you where supposed to enjoy the story. Yes, halo 3 has better multi-player than half life 2 (Hl2 HAS no multiplayer) But multi-player in halo 3 isnt very unique. just basic shoot the balls out of people with lasers. The animation and dialog in HL2 is part of the story and not very many games have beaten or matched it. And you dont just slam the f*cking keyboard all day jerk.

Halo is a good franchise, but Half life 2 is in my opinion a better game. Dont talk shit about games and the players because you never played for more than 10 minutes and love to play console. Play hl2 on the pc and go look up “Half life 2 moddb” and scroll thru the mod section or buy gmod. Btw: half life 2 has a build your own map program. its just not in-game because if it was it would suck butt because you can just add crap to pre made maps.

  32. craigW October 3, 2010 at 4:01 am #

i have recently played half life 2 and my first thoughts were a bit mixed, i thought the start of the game where you were taken to some kind of prison camp was a very interesting way to start, to then having to escape.
i thought some of the level designs were very well done and the graphics were top notch, some puzzles were challenging(which i appreciate in games) and i thought enemies were very tough at times which is a good challenge.

A few problems i did have with the game was the game play, now i do like first person shooters but i thought the game play was very bland at times shooting countless number of enemies, i also found that even if under cover you could be shot at which was another gripe i had unfortunately.
and people saying this game was easy i have to disagree, maybe i suck at these type of games or what but i did find game play annoying at times with enemies being way too difficult.
i also think they could have widened levels so there was more to explore and a map would have been a nice feature.

my personal opinion if i had to give a score i would say a decent 7/10, this game wont be for everyone and at its cheap price now days i would give it a shot if you are into first person shooters.

  33. david October 16, 2010 at 5:54 pm #

The game sucks period. One of the most disappointing games I have played in years. Talk about the CHUMP Factor! FUCK! Crappy sound – forced through the game like a lab rat. You people that like this game have no idea of what a good game is.

  34. bigQ November 1, 2010 at 10:07 am #

    at jon fjord:

are you just mad that your mom won’t pay for a new pc for you? come on now jon, your mother paid good money for that tv, couch, console, and 60 dollar video game, you dont have to go and hate on pc users just because you cant run pc games.

I’m gonna go play halo on my pc just because i can 🙂

  35. IDK December 11, 2010 at 10:51 pm #

David, are you fucking kidding me is it because you have a shitty old sound system? AND no you don’t know of what a good game is YOU DON’T! just think of the time and effort they put into Half-life 2! stunning game! so you can go take that broken penis of yours back to your trailer and play half-life 2 on your shitty PC on your shitty sound system, cuntbag
