Tony Hawk DownHill is a step Up

15 Oct

Whenever you hear someone review a Tony Hawk Game it’s important to understand their frame of reference. When in the Tony Hawk legacy did they get on and off the bandwagon. Unless you have never played any of TH games before this will help you qualify their take on the review product. So anyhow for me it was TH2. I’ve played a couple since, some for hours some for days, most not at all and this is what I’ve come up with.

Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam was a good idea.

Of all the modifications that have been added this one strips the whole series down and focuses on what was always fun. High speed action, ridiculous roof skating and customization- if you’re into that kind of thing. The coolest new feature in this iteration is the rating of falls. This has been around for a long time but now even when your landing is rated as a D it’s almost impossible to fully bail. A bad landing rewards with measly points but doesn’t force a fall and thus slow game play. Designers take note- this was a great way to reward but not punish.

So yeah.

Get this game. I wanted a weekend of stupidity, high compulsion loops and the ability to turn down theTV sound and turn up my own music. THDJ succeeded marvelously and was a welcome reintroduction to the fold. You should try it if you’re looking for an easy access gaming experience.

Alright.  It’s been almost a week sionce I intitialy posted this and I have to point out one more thing.  This is the single most broken game I’ve ever seen commercially released.  It’s amazing how many times I’ve got stuck in the walls, behind bushes and a wide assortment of other obscure spots.

For the record this almost makes the game more fun because it’s funny as hell buyt if you like your games unbreakable this is the Sam Jackson to your Big Bad Bruce Willis.
